Further Comments on Graduation Requirements

* World History is required of all CCSD students and fulfills the Arts/Humanities state requirement.
* Mathematics course units must include at least Algebra I or Algebra IH, or Applied Algebra IA and IB or above for students who enroll in the 9th grade during or after the 2003-2004 school year.
*A waiver for Physical Education II Credit will be granted if a student participates outside of the school day in approved athletics or on a drill team, marching band, dance group, or cheerleading squad. The student must actively participate in the activity for 120 hours and satisfactorily complete the activity/season in order to receive a waiver.
*One half (1/2) credit can be earned if the student has successfully completed a Computer Literacy course with a passing grade in middle school.

CCSD 21st Century Course of Study Expectations – not required for Odyssey students, but highly recommended for students to be competitive in higher education and the workforce.

Make-Up Credits
Students may earn a total of six (6) external credits. No more than 3 external credits in English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Students enrolled in external credit cannot take a course at a lower level than current enrollment. For example a student cannot take a lower math class and count it as elective credit.

Correspondence Credit
Courses must be taken from approved correspondence schools ( Nevada Department of Education) A list is available in the main office. Credit By Exam phone 799-8636 ext.329 Information is in the main office. Distance Education: www.ccsdde.net

Work Experience and Community Service Credit
Outside work experience and Community Service can be submitted to receive High school credits. A total of 270 hours of work experience per semester is required to earn .5 credits. A maximum of two credits hours may be earned. Sixty hours of Community Service volunteer experience per semester will earn .5 credits. A maximum of of one credit may be earned.

Nevada High School Proficiency Examination
Required for Graduation
To receive a diploma from a Nevada high school, students must pass the Nevada High School Proficiency Examination in addition to meeting course requirements. In compliance with Nevada Revised Statutes, the Nevada Department of Education has developed 'new' high school proficiency tests that are scheduled to be implemented for the Class of 2003 with one exception. That is, the Science examination will be added beginning with the graduating class of 2005. The "new" tests in reading, writing, math, and science are aligned to the 1998 academic standards. This is in contrast to past high school proficiency examinations which were aligned to the 1994 course of study. The first opportunity to take the mathematics and reading exams is in the spring of the sophomore year. During the junior year students have two opportunities to take the mathematics, reading, and science exams and one opportunity to take the writing exam. Students who do not pass all four tests by the end of the junior year will have additional opportunities during the senior year. Any student who completes course requirements but does not pass the Nevada High School Proficiency Examinations will receive a Certificate of Attendance rather than a diploma.

Matriculation - Academic Load Requirements
Beginning with students enrolled in 9th grade in the 2002-2003 school year, matriculation to the next grade level is based on credits earned, not years in attendance.

  To be Classified as a: A Student must earn a minimum of:  
  Sophmore (10th grade) 5 credits  
  Junior (11th grade) 11 credits  
  Senior (12th grade) 16.5 credits  

Parents should call their child's counselor if they have any questions about their child's grade level classification.
